Computing and E-Safety

Computing 1

INTENT:  At St Peter’s, we deliver a high-quality computing curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum, enabling pupils to become confident, responsible and capable users of technology. From the Early Years, pupils develop foundational skills which are built on progressively across the school. The curriculum develops knowledge across computer science, information technology and digital literacy, with a focus on computational thinking, creativity and problem solving. E-safety is central, ensuring pupils understand how to stay safe and act responsibly online in an ever-changing digital world.

IMPLEMENTATION:  Computing is taught through a coherent, progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6, following the NCCE Teach Computing programme, supported by Barefoot Computing in EYFS and Be Internet Legends. Learning is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge, with retrieval practice supporting long-term retention. Pupils develop skills through practical and discussion-based lessons, including programming, digital media, data handling and online communication, using a range of devices. Cross-curricular links further strengthen understanding and relevance. Adaptive teaching ensures all pupils are supported and challenged through scaffolding, targeted questioning and flexible grouping. E-safety is embedded throughout the curriculum, with E-safety ambassadors leading half-termly themed collective worship to promote safe and responsible online behaviour. Assessment is ongoing and responsive. Teachers use formative assessment within lessons and record outcomes through digital platforms. Progress is tracked half-termly using assessment grids and digital tools to identify misconceptions, monitor progression and inform future teaching.

IMPACT: Pupils demonstrate secure and progressive knowledge across all strands of computing. They apply their skills confidently in programming, digital creativity and communication, and understand the role of technology in the modern world. They use technology safely and responsibly, supported by a strong whole-school culture of e-safety. Assessment evidence shows that pupils make good progress from their starting points and retain key knowledge over time. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident, independent and responsible users of technology, well prepared for the next stage of their education.
