INTENT:  At St Peter’s, we believe that learning a foreign language provides significant educational, social and cultural benefits for our pupils. Spanish plays a vital role in developing speaking, listening and literacy skills, while also boosting confidence and self-esteem. Our curriculum promotes intercultural understanding by giving pupils insight into different cultures and perspectives, while deepening their understanding of their own. It is designed to be engaging, accessible and progressive, fostering a love of language learning and laying strong foundations for future study. Pupils develop an understanding that language has structure and that these structures differ from English, while also strengthening their oracy and literacy skills. The curriculum further enriches learning by supporting meaningful cross-curricular links.

IMPLEMENTATION:  Spanish is taught weekly across Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme of work, which provides clear progression in knowledge and skills. Teachers use this as a foundation for planning and adapt lessons to meet the needs of their pupils through professional judgement and shared practice. Lessons are carefully structured to include retrieval of prior learning, explicit teaching of new vocabulary and language structures, and opportunities to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Clear learning outcomes are identified for all pupils, and adaptive teaching strategies such as scaffolding, variation and targeted support ensure that all learners can access the curriculum and make progress. Pupils record their learning in books where appropriate, and opportunities for regular practice support retention and fluency.  Assessment is embedded throughout lessons through ongoing teacher assessment, enabling staff to identify misconceptions and respond swiftly. At the end of each unit, summative assessments are used to check pupils’ progress against curriculum expectations and to inform future planning.

IMPACT: The impact of the Spanish curriculum is evidenced through both formative and summative assessment. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to continue language learning with confidence at Key Stage 3.  Pupils demonstrate understanding of spoken Spanish by listening and responding appropriately, and they speak and read aloud with increasing confidence, fluency and accuracy in pronunciation. They apply their phonics knowledge to decode unfamiliar language and are able to engage in simple, purposeful dialogue. Pupils develop an appreciation of cultural diversity, showing respect and understanding of different perspectives, while also making meaningful links between Spanish and English. As a result, pupils leave St Peter’s with a positive attitude towards language learning, increased confidence in communication, and a secure foundation for further study.
