History

HIS 1

INTENT: At St Peter’s, our History curriculum develops curiosity, critical thinking and a secure understanding of the past, with pupils at its centre. From the Early Years, children explore concepts such as “then and now,” establishing the foundations of chronological understanding and historical enquiry. The curriculum reflects diverse perspectives, enabling pupils to understand the complexity of history and its relevance to the modern world. Pupils are encouraged to question, interpret and evaluate the past, developing informed viewpoints and a strong sense of identity as thoughtful and empathetic citizens.

IMPLEMENTATION:  History is taught through a coherent, progressive curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum, covering key periods from ancient civilisations to the modern world. Units are carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and support pupils in making connections across time. Retrieval practice ensures key knowledge is revisited and retained. Teaching develops disciplinary skills including chronology, questioning, interpretation and analysis of evidence, progressing from the Early Years and Key Stage 1 to more complex thinking in Key Stage 2. Oracy is central, with pupils engaging in discussion, debate and explanation to deepen understanding and develop subject vocabulary. Adaptive teaching ensures all pupils are supported and challenged effectively. Learning is enriched through role-play, trips and local history. Knowledge organisers support recall, while assessment grids track progress, identify misconceptions and inform next steps.

IMPACT: Pupils demonstrate secure historical knowledge and critical thinking, evidenced through their use of sources, discussion and written work. Assessment grids support accurate tracking and responsive teaching. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils analyse evidence, understand different interpretations and construct reasoned arguments. They communicate confidently using historical vocabulary and show an appreciation of diverse perspectives. Pupils develop a strong sense of identity through studying local and global history and leave St Peter’s well prepared to engage thoughtfully with the past in the modern world.
