PE

INTENT: At St Peter’s, we aim to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. Our PE curriculum is broad, balanced and aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead active, healthy lives. From the Early Years, children develop core physical skills such as coordination, balance and control, forming the foundations for future learning. Pupils build on these through a secure grounding in fundamental movement skills in Key Stage 1 and apply them confidently across a range of activities and competitive sports in Key Stage 2. They develop an interest in sport, the ability to evaluate performance, and are supported to achieve key outcomes, including swimming at least 25 metres by the end of Year 6.
IMPLEMENTATION: All pupils receive a minimum of two hours of high-quality PE each week. Across the school, teaching is progressive and inclusive, using adaptive approaches such as scaffolding, modelling and targeted support to ensure all pupils are appropriately challenged. Ongoing assessment informs teaching and supports progression in skills and knowledge. The curriculum includes a wide range of sports and physical activities from Reception to Year 6, with clear progression and opportunities for both skill development and competitive application. Pupils take part in inter-school competitions, including football and cross country, and benefit from our involvement in the Tameside School Sports Partnership, which provides further opportunities for competition and staff development. Physical activity is promoted beyond lessons through active break and lunchtime provision and a broad range of extra-curricular clubs. Participation in clubs and competitions is tracked to ensure increased engagement for all pupils.
IMPACT: Pupils leave St Peter’s with a positive attitude towards physical activity and a secure understanding of how to develop and improve their performance. They demonstrate key life skills, including teamwork, resilience and self-motivation, and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Assessment shows that pupils make good progress from their starting points and apply their skills across a range of activities, including competitive sport. Increased participation in extra-curricular activities reflects high levels of engagement, ensuring pupils are well prepared to lead active, healthy lives beyond primary school.
