Geography

Geo 1

INTENT: At St Peter’s, our Geography curriculum develops a secure understanding of the world, it's environments and cultures, with pupils at it's centre. From the Early Years, children explore their immediate environment, laying the foundations for future learning. Pupils develop knowledge of place, location and geographical processes, enabling them to understand both their local area and the wider modern world. The curriculum emphasises key skills, including map work, data analysis and fieldwork, while fostering curiosity and responsibility. Pupils engage with global issues such as sustainability, climate change and social justice, developing as informed global citizens. A carefully sequenced curriculum ensures knowledge and skills build progressively over time.

IMPLEMENTATION:  Geography is taught through a progressive, knowledge-rich curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum. Units are coherently sequenced to build on prior learning and develop understanding of locational knowledge, place, and human and physical geography. Retrieval practice is embedded to secure long-term retention.  Fieldwork is central, with each year group undertaking at least one study annually. Learning is enriched through outdoor experiences, purposeful activities and the use of digital tools such as DigiMaps alongside maps, atlases and globes. Cross-curricular links with English, History and Science deepen understanding. Oracy is prioritised through discussion and precise use of subject vocabulary, enabling pupils to explain and justify their thinking. Adaptive teaching, including scaffolding and targeted questioning, ensures all pupils are supported and challenged. Knowledge organisers reinforce key concepts and vocabulary, while assessment grids track understanding, identify misconceptions and inform teaching.

IMPACT: Pupils develop secure geographical knowledge and skills, evidenced through their work, discussion and accurate use of vocabulary and fieldwork skills. Ongoing assessment, supported by assessment grids, enables teachers to address misconceptions and demonstrate progress over time. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils confidently apply their knowledge to understand interconnections within the modern world. They engage with global issues, articulate their ideas clearly and recognise their role in promoting sustainability and social responsibility. Pupils leave St Peter’s as informed, reflective learners with a strong foundation for future study.
