At St Peter’s, pupils in Reception, Blossom and Y1 take part in daily ‘Talk Through Stories’ sessions. The programme is a structured, adult-led approach used to develop children’s vocabulary, communication and early language skills. High-quality texts are carefully sequenced across the year to introduce and revisit ambitious Tier 2 “Goldilocks” vocabulary.

Key words are explicitly taught, modelled and rehearsed before children apply them independently through play, storytelling and continuous provision. This ensures vocabulary is securely embedded and used in meaningful contexts, rather than learned incidentally.

This approach works alongside our Read Write Inc. programme, ensuring children develop strong oral language alongside early reading and phonics. Rich talk, repetition and storytelling support children in becoming confident speakers and successful readers.

Impact: Children develop a rich vocabulary, strong communication skills and secure foundations for phonics, reading and writing as they move into Y2 and beyond.
